Since I posted my last blog, I have been busy with consulting commitments, travel and community service projects. These activities distracted me from focusing on the sorry state of our country and have given me a sense of fulfillment and joy. However, my outrage has been building as our country veers more toward crazy. I know that some people think they cannot influence decisions and that their demands for positive change will go unheard. You can guarantee this will be the case if you don’t raise your voices.
This past Monday, as my Laguna Beach, CA, bestie Mary Williams, and I were wrapping up our annual New York City visit, we couldn’t ignore the non-stop news about 45’s zero tolerance immigration policy that separates children from their parents at the US/Mexico border. Without saying a word, we simultaneously called our respective senators and representatives in Washington, DC, to voice our individual outrage about this inhumane practice. Mary took her concern to the next level and called 45’s comment line (202.456-1111), which inspired me and added another protest tool to my tool kit. We were both able to talk to staffers, and not just leave voice messages. Politicians log the number of calls they receive on various issues, so please CALL and share your opinion about this awful practice and whatever else is on your mind. FYI: I called 45’s comment line this morning, and heard this message, “You call cannot be completed at this time. Please try again later.” I hope this is a sign that citizens are blowing up his phone. I will call later.
I know that I am like a broken record with my constant refrain encouraging friends, family and other associates to speak up and speak out against practices, policies, laws, actions, etc. that do not represent the true nature of Americans and threaten our existence as a respected, humane country. But I will continue to make this request. Remember—Politicians work for us and we determine their tenure in office.
As I compose this post, MSNBC is playing in the background, with non-stop coverage of our latest humanitarian crisis. And it’s hard to write about this child abuse, which has been condoned by 45’s administration. When Rachel Maddow broke down in tears at the end of her broadcast last night and couldn’t read breaking news about the “tender-age” shelters that are housing babies and toddlers, I cried with her. This is immoral, indecent, and despicable to the billionth degree. We must not be silent. And the fact that our tax dollars are paying for these internment facilities is an affront to common decency and a misuse our money.
We can’t give up our fight for what’s right. I strongly believe that we all have the power to resist the actions that threaten to crush all that is wonderful about America. If we abdicate our responsibility as citizens, we are doomed to re-live some of the worst atrocities in the history of the world. Native American massacres, indentured servitude, slavery, Japanese internment camps, the Holocaust, Rwandan genocide, the Syrian crisis and more should be enough “horribleness” for all of us to suffer.
Our voices matter, and we must express our outrage!
