State of Our Union

  • On September 26, 2018

Time flies by and if you aren’t careful, its forceful winds will either propel you forward or knock you down. I prefer to move forward. So, I remind myself daily to keep moving, and I am doing just that by celebrating the four-year anniversary of my blog, It’s Wanda Time. I’ve shared my thoughts about many “happenings” in my life, and have commented on the “State of Our Union” quite a bit…so much so that a friend recently mentioned that she hadn’t seen my political commentary lately. Anyway, as hard as I’ve tried not to focus on politics (taking periodic breaks from writing so as not to get overwhelmed by the gravity of our current situation), many of the subjects are political in nature. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Every day, the craziness and negativity that has engulfed our political process hits us like a left hook to the face from the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. We have endured so much ridiculous stuff as the result of an extremely dysfunctional White House and Congress. And the United States has been and continues to be embarrassed on the world stage, by:

  • an infantile 45th president who struggles to read, write and talk, and is a “laughing stock” at the 2018 United Nations General Assembly;
  • a White House administration that embraces and protects racism/bigotry, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia and every other discriminatory behavior;
  • a Senate, led by the most dishonorable Mitch McConnell (R-KY), that refused to schedule a vote on Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. This has led us to our current national charade of the possible lifetime Supreme Court appointment of Brett Kavanaugh, an accused sexual assaulter, like 45 (yes, I believe Dr. Christine Blasey Ford);
  • a disgusting display of overt racism and lack of empathy by 45 after the deadly Ku Klux Klan rally in Charlottesville, VA;
  • the increasing number of unarmed African-American men shot and killed by the police;
  • and more despicable acts that you have read about or seen with your own eyes.

Opting out of the political process will not affect social and political change. I pray that eligible citizens will register to vote…actually go to the polls….mail in their absentee ballots. It may be wishful thinking, but I hope record numbers of citizens will exercise their right to vote in the upcoming mid-term elections.  It’s the best thing we can do to save the “State of Our Union”.

(L to R) Sharon, me and Vicki recently spent time in the Contemplation Court at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1958 quote, displayed on the wall, inspired us: “We are determined…to work and fight until justice rains down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

I could hear Dr King's resonating voice stating that quote. Thank you for that, and all you do....Angela
