I have been trying to write this blog post since I learned the results of the November 6, 2018 U.S. mid-term elections while traveling in South America with my dear friend, Mae Douglas, who I met at Odyssey Executive Women’s Retreat in 2001. We recognize that our incredibly courageous civil rights warriors made unimaginable sacrifices for us to have the right to vote and to live our “best lives”. So, we ALWAYS vote whenever and where ever we can. This time, we mailed our ballots before we left the U.S.
Yes, we were happy to learn that the Democratic Party exceeded expectations and regained control of the U.S. House of Representatives after eight years. And we were disgusted that several racists like Steve King (R-IA), criminals like Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Chris Collins (R-NY) and other despicable candidates were re-elected to various key offices.
We were ecstatic that Andrew Gillum (D-FL), Stacey Abrams (D-GA), Ben Jealous (D-MD), Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), Krysten Sinema (D-AZ), Bill Nelson (D-FL) and others stood strong for our true American values on election day. I thank them for waking up the nation and restoring hope that we WILL emerge from the mess that has been perpetuated on us by the openly racist, sexist, misogynist, rude, ignorant, disrespectful, cruel, evil occupant of the White House.
We may not have the election results we want YET, but change is in the air. Votes are still being counted and recounted. People are still protesting in the streets. We are raising our voices up against social injustice. We refuse to roll over.
We must always remember that lives were lost so we could vote…and we will not allow our votes to be suppressed.
We will fight on!
