Recognize (again)!
- On February 20, 2017
On this President’s Day, I would like to recognize and thank our elected officials, Democrat, Republican, Independent and others, for having the courage to represent and serve us. Many people may not know that I began my post-college career as a 22-year-old legislative aide in the Michigan House of Representatives. While in that position, I realized that you don’t have to be the president to be a leader. I also learned that a political leader’s agenda has to reflect the constituents she or he serves. And that respect has to be earned.
Today, I would like to highlight a senator who, in my opinion, could ascend to a higher office, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). I respect her and I am comforted that she is my representative in the Senate during this tumultuous time. She was recently profiled in a Huffington Post article entitled A Mild-Mannered Woman From Washington is the Democrats’ Deadliest Weapon, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-mild-mannered-woman-from-washington-is-the-democrats-deadliest-weapon_us_58a77653e4b037d17d27d494?i0uvy851s241b57b9.
She is a fighter, who motivates me to continue to resist 45 and his divisive rhetoric and policies. This past week, she inspired me to resist in the following ways:
- Signed the Daily Kos petition that asked to see 45’s tax returns (campaigns@dailykos.com); and
- Made phone calls and/or sent emails requesting an independent investigation into 45’s ties to Russia and Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election to the following: Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) 202.224-2621, John McCain (R-AZ) www.mccain.senate.gov, Maria Cantwell (D-WA) 202.224-3441, Mitch McConnell (R-KT) www.mcconnell.senate.gov, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) 202.224-6542, and U.S. Representatives Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Oversight Committee Chair, whose voice mail box 202.225-7751, was consistently full and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) 202.225-3106.
It only took me a few minutes to make calls and write emails to voice my opinion. It took me a little longer to write the personal thank you notes that I sent to members of Congress and judges who I think are doing a good job on our behalf. But it was time well spent, because it’s important to recognize.
